FAQ (EFIS UPGRADE 2008)

Why?

New technology! New computer, faster, smaller, less power, more capability, better audio fidelity, digital autopilot, more data!

What motherboard?

EPIA VIA M II (Mini-ITX form)

Does that thing have enough power to do all the tricks needed?

Yes! 1 GHz processor easily drives the map, and a DVD simultaneously, in fact he processor runs at 35% using this load.

XM Weather? How much $$

YES! Using the WX Worx Dual ensemble receiver. This receiver detects both weather and music. The music is outputted by the receiver at the its audio output connector. The music is controlled by the Anywhere XP WX moving map software. The used need to have two subscriptions, one for weather such as the Aviator Lite ($39.95.month) and then the audio subscription which is an additional $7/month.

How did you do audio?

This is a bit complex because the new system generates five types of audio signals:

1. Comm radio
2.XM audio music
3.Computer audio (DVD and obstacle/terrains warnings etc)
4. EFIS MASTER CAUTIONS (beep tone)
5. MONROY Traffic Alerts (""Traffic" - Traffic near!")

Comm radio signals are sent to the intercom in a traditional fashion.

Stereo XM radio music and stereo Computer audio is combined using a 6DB mixer to allow both signals to be heard in stereo though the headphones. This gives full fidelity stereo music as well as DVD audio for those long trips.

EFIS MASTER CAUTIONS are injected into an intercom un-used passenger input. This signal was WAY too loud so a 20K ohm resistor was inserting in the line to bring it to an appropriate level. (trial and error on the resistor size)

MONROY traffic alerts were also injected into the intercom using the remaining unused passenger input. Another 20K ohm resistor was also used to bring audio level down to an appropriate level.

Using this technique, all distracting aural alerts can be muted by selecting the intercom mode switch to ISO (isolate). then only the passenger has to listen to them!

What's that Composite video connector on the motherboard for?

It drives the passenger repeater screen so they can watch the movie and map too.
